Support Groups for New Moms in Philadelphia
 

   

The Center For Growth, Inc. located in downtown Philadelphia offers the following support groups for moms:

  • The Pregnancy Support Group (PSG)
  • The Baby Blues Support Group (BBSG)
  • The Postpartum Depression Support Group (PDSG)

 

Pregnancy Support Group: This pregnancy support group is designed to answer all the questions that women have that their doctors do not have time to answers and to create an environment where women can support each other.  It takes a village to raise a child.  Getting informed about what to expect and establishing a support network is the first step to taking care of yourself as you embark upon this new journey of motherhood.   

 Topics that will be covered:

  • First trimester body changes.
  • Second trimester body changes.
  • Third trimester body changes.
  • Pregnancy and nutrition. What foods to focus on and what foods to minimize.
  • Pregnancy and body image. Adjusting to your new look.
  • Pregnancy and exercise.  Thoughts, tips and ideas for what to do.
  • Sex and pregnancy, is it safe? Typical sexual changes in intimacy, libido, positions and sensations.
  • What is a doula? And how do I locate one.
  • Getting ready for baby.
  • Asking for help and setting boundaries with friends and family.
  • Preparing for parenthood.
  • Philadelphia resources.

 The Baby Blues Support Group:  The Baby Blues Support Group is for you if your baby is less than four months old and you find yourself sometimes: 

  • Feeling insecure? Doubting your ability to parent? Overwhelmed by the responsibility of needing to care for others?
  • Experiencing a major sense of loss? Do you miss your old identity? Your old body? Your old life with your partner or do you simply miss your free time?
  • Feeling stressed out? Are you having trouble being super-mom?

 The Postpartum Depression Support Group:  The Postpartum Depression Support Group is for you if your baby is less than six months old and you find yourself sometimes: 

  • Feeling depressed or anxious.
  • Wondering why motherhood is not was wonderful as you expected it to be.
  • Not feeling like you are in love with your child the way you are supposed to be
  • Feeling emotionally flat.
  • Sleep deprived and exhausted.
  • Limited the number of activities that you do with your child for fear of what might happen.
  • Experiencing obsessive thinking and / or disturbing thoughts
  • Feeling lonely and wanting to connect with other mothers.

The topics that will be covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Getting the support you need
  • The myths of motherhood VS the reality of motherhood
  • The role of fathers and other primary caregivers
  • Identifying & overcoming the negative thought patterns
  • Skill building, taking care of yourself and your family
  • Medications, and are they safe?
